The Royals missed the playoffs in 2016 after appearing in back-to-back World Series. Prior to that two-year stretch, Kansas City failed to make the playoffs in 28 consecutive seasons, and the team is hoping to avoid another disastrous run like that by pushing for the playoffs in 2017. As of August 2, the Royals held the second wild card position by one-and-a-half games over the Seattle Mariners, but the team had taken steps to improve its roster through trades.

On July 24, Kansas City added three big-league arms to its pitching staff through a trade with the San Diego Padres. The Royals dealt pitchers Travis Wood and Matt Strahm and infield prospect Esteury Ruiz to the Padres for Trevor Cahill, Brandon Maurer, and Ryan Butcher. Cahill projects to be the Royals’ fifth starter behind Jason Vargas, Danny Duffy, Jason Hammel, and Ian Kennedy. In 11 starts with the Padres, he had a 4-3 record with a 3.69 earned run average (ERA) and 72 strikeouts in 61 innings. Both Maurer and Butcher will add much-needed depth to the Royals bullpen.
